How to Check if a Phone Is Original in Kenya

Fake and refurbished-as-new phones are common in Kenya. These checks take five minutes and work on any iPhone, Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Redmi or other smartphone.

1. Check the IMEI matches everywhere

Dial *#06# to show the IMEI. It must match the IMEI printed on the box label and the one under Settings (About phone on Android; General, then About on iPhone). A mismatch is the clearest warning sign that a phone or its box has been swapped.

2. Verify the IMEI with the Communications Authority

SMS the 15-digit IMEI to 1555. The Communications Authority of Kenya's device check replies with the brand and model the IMEI belongs to. If the reply doesn't match the phone in your hand, don't buy it.

3. Inspect the box and seals

A new phone comes in a sealed box with the correct model number, colour and storage printed on the label. Loose plastic, a re-glued seal, a misspelt label or missing accessories that should be included are red flags.

4. Check the software

Open Settings and confirm the model number, storage and RAM match what you're paying for. Check for a system update: genuine phones update normally from the manufacturer. On an iPhone, enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com to confirm the model and warranty status.

5. Check the battery and screen

On an iPhone, Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health shows maximum capacity: a new phone shows 100%. Look at the screen at an angle for dead pixels, uneven colour or a slightly raised edge, which can mean a replaced display.
