How to Buy a Phone Online Safely in Kenya

Buying a phone online in Kenya is convenient and often cheaper than a shop, but scams on social media are common. Here's how to buy safely, whoever you buy from.

Buy from a real business

Look for a proper website with clear prices, a registered business, delivery and returns policies, and real customer reviews. Be careful with sellers who only exist as a social media page or a WhatsApp number.

Pay through a business payment system

Pay via a business Paybill or Till, or an online checkout that sends the M-Pesa prompt to your phone. Avoid sending money to a personal number, and never share your M-Pesa PIN; no genuine seller will ask for it.

If the price looks too good, it probably is

A new phone priced far below every other shop is usually a fake, a refurbished phone sold as new, a stolen device, or a scam where nothing is delivered. Compare prices across a few stores before you pay.

Check the phone when it arrives

Before you accept the phone, match the IMEI on the box, in Settings and from *#06#, and confirm the model and storage. Keep your M-Pesa confirmation message and the order number as proof of purchase.

Know the returns policy

Read what happens if the phone is faulty before you buy. At Trivo Kenya every item has a 7-day replacement policy for factory defects, and if we can't get an item you've paid for we offer an alternative or a full refund.

How ordering works at Trivo Kenya

Add the phone to your cart and pay with M-Pesa at checkout: the prompt comes from Safaricom to your phone, and you get an order number straight away. Delivery is free in Nairobi and KES 500 to the rest of Kenya.
