New vs Refurbished vs Ex-UK Phones in Kenya
Phone listings in Kenya use words like 'brand new', 'refurbished', 'ex-UK' and 'open box'. Here's what each one really means and which is right for you.
Brand new
Unused, sealed in the original box with all accessories, and eligible for the full manufacturer warranty. It costs the most, but you get 100% battery health and the longest software support.
Refurbished
A phone that was used or returned, then repaired, tested and resold. Quality depends on who refurbished it: manufacturer-refurbished phones can be excellent, while others may have replacement screens or batteries. Always ask what was replaced and what warranty is included.
Ex-UK (and ex-US, ex-Dubai)
Usually means a second-hand phone imported from abroad. Condition, battery health and whether it's network-locked vary a lot. Ask for the battery health percentage, check the IMEI, and make sure the phone works with Kenyan SIM cards before paying.
Open box
A new phone whose box has been opened, often a display unit or a return. It should be close to new, but check for scratches and confirm the warranty still applies.
Which should you buy?
Buy brand new if you want the longest life and full warranty. A good refurbished or ex-UK phone can be great value for an iPhone or Samsung flagship, as long as you check battery health and IMEI and know the returns policy.
